The Tofu Festival is Wireless!


For the second year in a row, the Los Angeles Tofu Festival will be providing free Wi-Fi services. Little Tokyo Unplugged is a project that provides Wi-Fi Internet services to local residents, visitors, small businesses, and the nonprofit community. The wireless network contributes to the overall community and economic development of the neighborhood, and helps promote the Little Tokyo community’s culture and heritage through a wireless Internet network and a website.

 

Little Tokyo Unplugged is a project of the Little Tokyo Service Center, a Community Development Corporation. Little Tokyo Wi-Fi Scavenger Hunt Rules

General Background and Information

The Little Tokyo Wi-Fi Scavenger Hunt is an event of Little Tokyo Unplugged, which offers public wi-fi hotspots in the local community. Little Tokyo Unplugged is a nonprofit project of the Little Tokyo Service Center, a Community Development Corporation. To play, contestants must register in person at the Little Tokyo Unplugged booth located inside the Los Angeles Tofu Festival grounds.

Game Objective:

To complete the Wi-Fi Scavenger hunt with the correct answers to clues in the quickest time possible.

       The estimated time to complete the Wi-Fi Scavenger Hunt is 45 minutes

Before you begin, you must...

    • Receive an in/out hand stamp for the Tofu Festival at the entrance gate.

    • Be hydrated. The Little Tokyo Unplugged booth will offer a free bottle of water to players who request one.

    • Be in good health and well-rested.

The Little Tokyo Service Center, a Community Development Corporation, is not responsible nor liable for any personal injuries or loss that may result from any individual’s participation in the Wi-Fi Scavenger Hunt; your registration into this activity signifies your understanding of these terms.

Player Registration

    1. Registration for the scavenger hunt is free, but all players are responsible for their own admission into the Festival.

    2. Players/Teams must be physically present to register at the Little Tokyo Unplugged booth at the Tofu Festival (http://www.tofufestival.com) during the Festival. Players are responsible for their own admission into the Festival.

    3. Online registration is not available.

    4. Each player may only enter once between August 18 and 19, with a limit of two players per team.

    5. Each player is responsible for his/her own wirelessly-enabled device (laptop/PDA) to participate in the Wi-Fi Scavenger Hunt.

During Play

    1. Players/Teams must answer questions in the order as they appear.

    2. CHEATING of any kind is not allowed (e.g., sharing answers with other players from other teams, Internet searches for answers).

    3. At least one player from each team (if two players per team) must physically go to the designated clue areas to collect answers.

    4. Players may ask people for directions, but not for the answers to game questions.

    5. If a player/team cannot complete a game question because of technical difficulties stemming from the wireless network, the team may request a new game entry at the Wireless booth.

Official Hours/Times of the Scavenger Hunt

    1. Players may register for the Wi-Fi Scavenger Hunt only during the following hours:

      Saturday, Aug 18th:   12.00 PM to 5.00 PM
      Sunday, Aug 19th:     12.00 PM to 3.30 PM

    2. Registration for the scavenger hunt will only be available during these hours; the booth will remain open for one hour after closing to allow players to complete the game.

Winning

    1. The first 50 individual players will receive a free gift upon completion of the hunt. Only one gift per individual.

    2. Top finishers for each day of the Wi-Fi Scavenger Hunt will receive prizes, and will be notified by mail and/or email; prizes will be on display at the Little Tokyo Unplugged booth.

    3. Top finishers will be based on 1) the most number of correct answers to clue questions, and 2) top times of completing the game.

    4. Top prize finishers: only one prize per team.

    5. Winners are responsible for claiming and picking up his/her prizes at the Little Tokyo Service Center offices, and must be physically present at the time and address mentioned in the prize notification mail and/or email to claim his/her prize. Alternatively, the prize can be shipped to his/her address at the cost of the winner.

Tofu Eating Contest

Saturday, August 18th at 4:00 pm at the JACCC

Contest Rules:
  • Contestants will be required to eat a 14 ounce block of House Foods Medium Firm Tofu.
  • Festival Judges will be judging the Tofu Eating contest. Contestants agree to abide by the Festival Judges’ decision. Festival Judges’ decisions are final.
  • Contestants will not be able to use their hands during the contest to eat the tofu.
  • There will be 10 contestants competing in each round with a total of 5 preliminary rounds. The first 2 contestants to eat the entire block of tofu will advance to the Final Round.
  • The first contestant to eat the entire block of tofu in the Final Round will win the Grand Prize
  • The second and third place winners of the Final Round will receive also receive prizes
  • In order for a contestant to completely finish the block of tofu, he/she must have swallowed the last mouth full of tofu as decided by the Festival Judges.
  • Contestants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Contest Rules are subject to change without notice.
Contest Registration:
  • Contestants must complete the Registration Form and turn it into the LTSC Info Booth.
  • The first given number of applicants will be given the opportunity to participate in the contest on a first-come, first-serve basis. All others will be placed on a waiting list should someone drop out before the contest begins. Those on the waiting list will be chosen in the order by which their registration form was turned in.
  • Registration Forms will be accepted between Saturday, August 18th at 12 noon and 2:30. No registration forms will be accepted prior to the opening of the festival on Saturday, August 18th.
  • Registration Forms will be available at the LTSC Info Booth
  • Contestants must report to the JACCC by 2:30 pm. Contestants who are not present by this time forfeit their opportunity to participate in the contest.

-This year’s Nisei Week Grand Parade will introduce one of the spectacular illuminated floats from Aomori’s Nebuta Festival to Little Tokyo. Regarded as one of the most famous festivals in Japan, illuminated floats are known to light up the night sky as Haneto dancers dance wildly to the accompanying rhythm of drums and flutes.

The 12th Annual 2007 LA Tofu Festival Raffle is giving away a VACATION FOR 2 TO JAPAN with roundtrip airfare in BUSINESS CLASS (LAX to Tokyo) provided by American Airlines and a 3-night stay for two at the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa, courtesy of Prince Hotels & Resorts, Japan.

Grand Prize Drawing will take place Sunday, August 19 at 4:00 pm (at the Raffle Booth) (Winners do not need to be present.)
